Eakins Hall was buzzing as Wyverns shared their knowledge with students over dinner at the Career Ready event on April 15.

Thirty-five Wyverns with experience in international relations, cognitive neuroscience, AI, art history, engineering, finance, and much more joined curious students to chat about career paths.

Grant Holtes (Wyvern 2016), Quantitative Developer at JANA investment advisors, enjoyed the conversation, and the company.

“It was a good opportunity to reconnect with the community and try to provide some useful opportunities and advice to students.  We discussed how the job market is more nuanced than it seems when applying for internships and grad roles. Roles that seem very similar can provide remarkably different outcomes and experiences. We talked about some strategies for finding good roles and avoiding undesirable ones. We also discussed my career journey to date, and shared tips for internship application season.” 

Olive Erickson (2^nd year Science) came to the dinner to be proactive about planning her future career path.

“I hoped to leverage the vast knowledge and experience of the Queen’s Wyvern network to help me determine the best direction for me. I was able to speak to several Wyverns who are at the forefront of fields I am considering for my career. These conversations were incredibly useful not only to gauge the practical aspects of each career prospect and shed light on next steps for pursuing my career goals, but also to connect with past students and feel empowered by the strong Wyvern professional network.”

Julia Kent (3^rd year Commerce) was keen to gain insight into opportunities in finance.

“I learned about the role of business developers in growing start-ups. These connections and insights will help me immensely with my graduate job search and broader career.”

Miranda Guy (3^rd year Arts) found the evening very beneficial for several reasons.

“Not only did it provide me with a better understanding of the course structure behind the post-graduate study I am planning to undertake, but I also gained insight into the extra-curricular opportunities on offer by the university and available through the Wyvern network. It also put me in closer contact with some Queeners who were in my shoes not that long ago.”
