SUMMARY:Sugden Institute Oration with Dr Leila Brammer
DESCRIPTION:The Master/Head of College\, Dr Stewart Gill OAM warmly invites you and your partner/guest to the next event in our Sugden Institute series. We are delighted to have Dr Leila Brammer who is our Sugden Fellow delivering the 2024 Sugden Oration. \nReclaiming Public Discourse: Freedom of Expression on Campus and in Communities \nDr Leila Brammer\nTuesday 26 March 2024\n5:30pm arrival for 6pm oration followed by\ndrinks and canapés\nBusiness attire\nRSVP to Michele Mulder at rsvp@queens.unimelb.edu.au \nOnsite parking is not available; Uber\, taxi\, trams recommended. \nORATION SYNOPSIS\nDiscourse rests at the nexus of open inquiry\, freedom of expression\, and democracy. The rigorous testing and refining of ideas necessary for pursuing knowledge and advancing democracy depend on the ability to seek out and engage multiple perspectives\, differences\, and disagreements. In the current climate of increasing tensions among groups and individuals\, campuses and communities face numerous challenges in responding to\, facilitating\, navigating\, and mediating public discourse. Placing the history and principles of freedom of expression in conversation with theory and practices reveals limitations of common modes of discourse and provides a framework for building the conditions and the capacities for vigorous\, inclusive\, and productive engagement about\, with\, and across differences and disagreements. \nDr Leila Brammer \nDr. Leila Brammer is the Director of Outreach and Instructional Development\, Parrhesia Program for Public Discourse at the University of Chicago. She studies and builds frameworks in which organizations and community members understand issues from multiple perspectives and work together to implement evidence-based approaches. She established a nationally recognized civic learning and engagement curriculum and a community-based public deliberation and dialogue program. At the University of Chicago\, she works with individuals and institutions to develop curricula and programs to foster vigorous\, inclusive\, and productive discourse in classrooms\, campuses\, and civic life.

SUMMARY:Sugden Institute Oration with Professor Susan Scott
DESCRIPTION:The Master/Head of College\, Dr Stewart Gill OAM warmly invites you and your partner/guest to the next event in our Sugden Institute series. We are delighted to have Professor Susan Scott as our guest speaker. \nSurfing gravitational waves to probe the dark side of the Universe \nProfessor Susan M Scott\nWednesday 20 March 2024\n5:30pm arrival for 6pm oration followed by\ndrinks and canapés\nBusiness attire\nRSVP to Michele Mulder at rsvp@queens.unimelb.edu.au \nOnsite parking is not available; Uber\, taxi\, trams recommended. \n  \nORATION SYNOPSIS\nIn 1915 Albert Einstein produced his miraculous new theory of gravitation\, general relativity. In the following years it would be well tested\, but only in local regions of the Universe where gravity is weak. It passed all these tests\, but it remained to be seen if it would still hold up\, or break down\, when tested in regions of the Universe where gravity is strong. \nA few months after Einstein announced his new theory\, he concluded that it predicted the existence of gravitational waves\, an entirely new form of radiation\, which is not part of the electromagnetic spectrum. He thought\, however\, that these waves would be too weak for us to ever detect them. \nFollowing a century of technology evolution\, and fundamental advances in our understanding of general relativity\, and despite an ongoing groundswell of naysayers and disbelievers\, in 2015 we achieved the remarkable first direct detection of gravitational waves on Earth. \nThis talk documents that journey. We will examine how well Einstein’s theory stands up under conditions of strong gravity\, and we will see how we can surf gravitational waves to probe the dark side of the Universe. \nProfessor Susan Scott\n\nProfessor Susan Marjorie Scott FAA is an Australian mathematical physicist whose work concerns general relativity\, gravitational singularities\, and black holes. She is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Australian National University (ANU). \nAt ANU\, she is the leader of the General Relativity Theory and Data Analysis Group\, part of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration that has discovered gravity waves from collisions involving black holes and neutron stars\, and is a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration Council.  Scott studied mathematics and physics at Monash University and has a doctorate in mathematical physics from the University of Adelaide. She spent four years working with Roger Penrose at the University of Oxford and was a Rhodes Visiting Fellow at Somerville College\, before joining the Australian National University faculty in 1998. She is a Chief Investigator for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery. \nScott was elected fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2016. In 2020\, she was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society\, and received the 2020 Dirac Medal of the University of New South Wales. In 2020\, she was a joint winner of the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science. She received the Walter Burfitt Prize from the Royal Society of New South Wales and the Walter Boas Medal from the Australian Institute of Physics in 2022. She was awarded the Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal by the Australian Academy of Science in 2023. \n\n

SUMMARY:Sugden Oration 2023
DESCRIPTION:SUGDEN ORATION 2023 \nGandhi: ‘Truth and Non-Violence’withProfessor Bindu PuriProfessor of Centre for Philosophy\, Jawaharlal Nehru University\, New Delhi \n\nEVENT DETAILSThursday 27 April 20235.30pm for 6:00pm followed by drinks and canapés\nQueen’s College\, Parkville\, Junior Common Room\nRSVP here by 20 April 2023\nOnsite parking is not available; Uber\, taxi\, trams recommended.\n\n \n \nORATION SYNOPSISAt a time when various parts of the world are experiencing war or the threat of war revisiting the message of Gandhi on non-violence  on the 75th anniversary of his death is timely. In this lecture our 2023 Sugden Fellow\, Professor Bindu Puri of JNU\, New Delhi\, will explore views on Satya or truth implying openness\, honesty and fairness. Satya is inseparable from Ahimsa which is an ancient Indian concept best expressed as non-violence. Gandhi made these concepts his own “by moulding tools for nonviolent action to use as a positive force in the search for social and political truths. Gandhi formed Ahimsa into the active social technique\, which was to challenge political authorities and religious orthodoxy.” Gandhi had many heroes in his pursuit of non-violence and drew particularly from the Russian author\, Leo Tolstoy. He said of Tolstoy’s\, The Kingdom of God Is Within that it overwhelmed him. “Before the independent thinking\, profound morality\, and the truthfulness of this book\,” he wrote\, “all books seemed to pale into insignificance.” Ultimately\, while influenced by Tolstoy\, Professor Puri will argue that Gandhi’s thinking on non-violence was rooted in ancient Indian philosophy. Gandhi’s relevance for our times is confirmed by the thought that today\, seventy five years after his death\, the call for ahimsa/non-violence seems both relevant and timely. \n  \nProfessor Bindu Puri\nBindu Puri is a professor of Indian Philosophy at the Centre for Philosophy\, School of Social Sciences\, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her main interests are in the areas of contemporary Indian philosophy and moral and political philosophy. Puri has over 57 papers in edited anthologies and philosophical and interdisciplinary journals; including Sophia\, Philosophia and the Journal of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research. She has authored three monographs; Gandhi and the Moral Life (2004) The Tagore-Gandhi Debate: On Matters of Truth and Untruth (Sophia: Studies in Cross-cultural Philosophy of Traditions and Cultures\, Vol. 9\, Springer 2015); and The Ambedkar-Gandhi Debate: On Identity\, Community and Justice (Singapore: Springer Nature\, 2022). Her most recent book\, co-authored with Professor Mrinal Miri\, Gandhi For the 21st Century: Religion\, Morality and Politics is currently in press with Springer Nature Publications. She has eight edited volumes\, the most recent being Reading Sri Aurobindo – Metaphysics\, Ethics and Spirituality (Singapore: Springer Nature\, 2022). She has presented over 160 papers and lectures at national and international forums. Professor Puri is a Fellow of the Australia India Institute\, University of Melbourne and a member of the editorial boards of  eminent journals of philosophy like Sophia and Philosophia. She delivered the prestigious annual ‘M K Gandhi lecture on Peace and the Humanities’ 2017 for the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Council of Ottawa\, Canada as well as the ‘Johnson and Hastings Lectures’ at the University of Mount Allison in Canada for the same year.\n \nABOUT SUGDEN INSTITUTE\nDr Edward Holdsworth Sugden (1854-1935) was first Master of Queen’s College. It has been said of Sugden that he combined the evangelical zeal of Wesley and the humanism of the university tradition. As such his engagement with Church\, university and community through the College was of equal importance to him.
