DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you and your partner to an ANZAC Seminar featuring memorial researchers Dr Katti Williams (Wyvern 1994)\, and Philip Powell (OW 1973). \nANZAC Seminar \nThursday 1 May 2025\n11.30am Seminar in the Queen’s College Junior Common Room\nfollowed by 12.30pm lunch \nPlease RSVP by Monday 28 April with any dietary requirements. \nNo onsite parking:\nUber\, taxi\, trams recommended. \nDr Katti Williams will share the story of the architects behind the Shrine\, Philip Hudson and James Wardrop\, and how their military service impacted their thinking for the memorial. She will also review other finalist entries. This will include previously unpublished pictorial material. \n \nRunner-up William Lucas’s design\n \nPhilip Powell has long researched the war histories and graves of Queen’s College and Wesley College students and will share some of his remarkable discoveries. \nAbout Dr Katti Williams\nPhD\, Wyvern 1994 \nKatti Williams is a Postdoctoral Research fellow in Australian architectural history\, in the Faculty of Architecture\, Building and Planning. Her PhD thesis\, completed in 2017 at the University of Melbourne\, comprised the first sustained academic study of the Australian early twentieth-century architect William Lucas\, with a specific focus on his unbuilt designs for First World War memorials. Her research is a nexus between art\, architectural\, military\, and cultural histories. \nHer major research interests include the design and interpretation of commemorative architecture\, manifestations and transformations of classical precedent\, soldier architects\, unbuilt competitive designs\, and rich architectural biography. \nAbout Philip Powell\nB.Com (Hons) \nPhilip Powell attended Wesley College Melbourne and the University of Melbourne. While focused on a career in finance\, in 2011\, he commenced researching the military service and stories of former Wesley College students in World Wars I and II.  Many of these were also Queen’s College residents. He has also visited many of the battlefields\, CWGC cemeteries and memorials. \nHe has documented their military service and is currently completing a book on the service of Old Wesley Collegians in WWII. He has given numerous presentations including at the Shrine of Remembrance and the AWM in Canberra. \nPhilip also served on the Wesley College Council for 10 years and was made a Fellow of the College in 2022. \n

He continued in the same role within Pilgrim Theological College from its foundation in 2015 and became Head of College in 2017. He leaves Pilgrim and Queen’s at the end of November to assume the role of Dean of Research and Director of New Testament Studies at Whitley College.

Nevertheless\, his combination of morality with the individual’s imagination as an active force that bridged aesthetics and public good led to W.E. Gladstone’s admiring paraphrase of Coleridge in 1838: ‘There must be a soul\, underlying and animating […]\, a cultivation of the inward man\, which is the root\, the corrective\, and the safeguard of civilisation’ (original emphasis). Gladstone went on to become four-time British prime minister (between 1868–94) and the embodiment of liberalism to his contemporaries. \nThe 2024 Sugden Oration sets out Coleridge’s ideas and traces their spread through influential undergraduate conversation societies in England (the Cambridge Apostles and Gladstone’s sister society at Oxford). It focuses on the role of sound in Coleridge’s prose writings and his poems\, ‘The Nightingale’ (1798) and ‘Kubla Khan’ (1816). In so doing\, the lecture lays out Coleridge’s thinking on a nest of ideas that influenced developing liberal ideologies in England. At the center of the argument lies a recovery of the vital role played by music – a largely overlooked subject in studies of liberal behavior and in scholarship on Coleridge. \nProfessor Phyllis Weliver\n\nPhyllis Weliver—Professor of English and Research Institute Fellow at Saint Louis University (USA) and Fellow of Gladstone’s Library in Wales—is Macgeorge Fellow at University of Melbourne and\, jointly\, Sugden Fellow at Queen’s College. Twice funded by the National Endowment of the Humanities (USA)\, she has given the Annual Gladstone Lecture at Gladstone’s Library\, spoken by invitation at the British Academy and Royal Academy of Music\, and written and presented for BBC Radio 3’s ‘The Essay’. In addition to her most recent book\, Mary Gladstone and the Victorian Salon: Music\, Literature\, Liberalism\, published by Cambridge University Press in 2017\, she is the author of Women Musicians in Victorian Fiction\, 1860–1900: Representations of Music\, Science and Gender in the Leisured Home and The Musical Crowd in English Fiction\, 1840–1910: Class\, Culture and Nation. Professor Weliver has also edited two volumes of essays (The Figure of Music in Nineteenth-Century British Poetry and\, with Katharine Ellis\, Words and Notes in the Long Nineteenth Century). Her current monograph\, from which this lecture is drawn\, examines British literature\, music\, and liberalism from 1810 to 1910.

The rigorous testing and refining of ideas necessary for pursuing knowledge and advancing democracy depend on the ability to seek out and engage multiple perspectives\, differences\, and disagreements. In the current climate of increasing tensions among groups and individuals\, campuses and communities face numerous challenges in responding to\, facilitating\, navigating\, and mediating public discourse. Placing the history and principles of freedom of expression in conversation with theory and practices reveals limitations of common modes of discourse and provides a framework for building the conditions and the capacities for vigorous\, inclusive\, and productive engagement about\, with\, and across differences and disagreements. \nDr Leila Brammer \nDr. Leila Brammer is the Director of Outreach and Instructional Development\, Parrhesia Program for Public Discourse at the University of Chicago. She studies and builds frameworks in which organizations and community members understand issues from multiple perspectives and work together to implement evidence-based approaches. She established a nationally recognized civic learning and engagement curriculum and a community-based public deliberation and dialogue program. At the University of Chicago\, she works with individuals and institutions to develop curricula and programs to foster vigorous\, inclusive\, and productive discourse in classrooms\, campuses\, and civic life.

In the following years it would be well tested\, but only in local regions of the Universe where gravity is weak. It passed all these tests\, but it remained to be seen if it would still hold up\, or break down\, when tested in regions of the Universe where gravity is strong. \nA few months after Einstein announced his new theory\, he concluded that it predicted the existence of gravitational waves\, an entirely new form of radiation\, which is not part of the electromagnetic spectrum. He thought\, however\, that these waves would be too weak for us to ever detect them. \nFollowing a century of technology evolution\, and fundamental advances in our understanding of general relativity\, and despite an ongoing groundswell of naysayers and disbelievers\, in 2015 we achieved the remarkable first direct detection of gravitational waves on Earth. \nThis talk documents that journey. We will examine how well Einstein’s theory stands up under conditions of strong gravity\, and we will see how we can surf gravitational waves to probe the dark side of the Universe. \nProfessor Susan Scott\n\nProfessor Susan Marjorie Scott FAA is an Australian mathematical physicist whose work concerns general relativity\, gravitational singularities\, and black holes. She is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Australian National University (ANU). \nAt ANU\, she is the leader of the General Relativity Theory and Data Analysis Group\, part of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration that has discovered gravity waves from collisions involving black holes and neutron stars\, and is a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration Council.  Scott studied mathematics and physics at Monash University and has a doctorate in mathematical physics from the University of Adelaide. She spent four years working with Roger Penrose at the University of Oxford and was a Rhodes Visiting Fellow at Somerville College\, before joining the Australian National University faculty in 1998. She is a Chief Investigator for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery. \nScott was elected fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2016. In 2020\, she was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society\, and received the 2020 Dirac Medal of the University of New South Wales. In 2020\, she was a joint winner of the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science. She received the Walter Burfitt Prize from the Royal Society of New South Wales and the Walter Boas Medal from the Australian Institute of Physics in 2022. She was awarded the Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal by the Australian Academy of Science in 2023. \n\n
