A New Zealand Case Study \nOration given by Associate Professor Suzanne Pitama (Ngāti Kahungunu) \nDATE:  Thursday 22 August\, 2019 \nTIME:  6pm followed by drinks and canapés \nVENUE: Junior Common Room\, Queen’s College \nRSVP: by Thursday 15 August to wyverns@queens.unimelb.edu.au  \nSuzanne Pitama (Ngāti Kahungunu) is the Associate Dean (Māori) and Associate Professor at the University of Otago\, Christchurch. \nSuzanne joined the University of Otago in 2001 from a clinical background in child psychology. She has since developed a keen interest in medical education and completed her PhD (Otago) on examining the place of indigenous health within medical education.Suzanne is the Hauora Māori Faculty Representative on the University of Otago Faculty of Medicine Curriculum Committee. In this role Suzanne chairs the Hauora Māori sub-committee\, whilst also contributing to other areas within the medical education field including the curriculum mapping\, the culture\, self and diversity working group and has an interest in measuring social accountability. Suzanne has a passion for teaching\, winning a University of Otago teaching award in 2014\, a national AKO Aotearoa tertiary teaching in excellence award in 2015 and the 2015 Prime Ministers Supreme Award for tertiary teaching excellence. \nSuzanne is also the Director of the Māori/Indigenous Health Institute (MIHI).  Suzanne has been involved in Māori health research for 18 years. Suzanne is currently leading an HRC funded project that is focusing on the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Māori communities and is a co-investigator on an international collaboration project (New Zealand\, Australia and Canada) looking at the role of medical education in addressing health disparities (Educating for Equity). Suzanne is also involved in a number of other research projects based within the University of Otago\, Christchurch focussed on indigenous experiences in the health system and patients living with chronic illnesses. She is a keen advocate for Kaupapa Māori based methodologies and has interests in child mental health\, medical curriculum development and Māori health community based projects. \nSuzanne is a member of the New Zealand Health Research Council (HRC) and Chairs the HRC Māori Health Committee.

DESCRIPTION:The Honourable Justice Lesley Taylor\nJoin us as we welcome our guest speaker\, The Honourable Justice Lesley Taylor of the Supreme Court of Victoria presenting on \n“The Special Court for Sierra Leone: Some Reflections on Transitional Justice”\nThe Honourable Justice Lesley Taylor was appointed to the Supreme Court of Victoria in July 2018. She had previously practiced as a lawyer for 25 years\, including 20 years as a barrister at the Victorian Bar\, where she was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2011. \nAs counsel\, her Honour primarily undertook criminal cases\, both prosecuting and defending in areas ranging from terrorism\, to corporate crime\, to murder. Her Honour has also worked in various international bodies\, including under the auspices of the United Nations and the High Commissioner for Human Rights. In this regard\, in 2004 and 2005 her Honour was Senior Trial Counsel at the Office of the Prosecutor in Sierra Leone; in 2006 she was Senior Counsel assisting the Independent Commission of Inquiry into Timor Leste\, and in 2011 she was Senior Advisor to the Special Independent Commission of Inquiry into Kyrgyzstan. \nHer Honour also regularly teaches internationally\, having instructed in advocacy in Uganda in both 2015 and 2017\, and in Cambodia in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:John McCarthy AO\nJohn McCarthy AO is a former Australian career diplomat\, with posts including ambassadorships to Vietnam\, Mexico\, Thailand\, the United States\, Indonesia\, Japan and India. Since leaving DFAT\, where he was Chief of Staff to the then Foreign Minister\, Andrew Peacock\, Chief Legal Officer and Deputy Secretary\, he has been National President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs\, has chaired the Australian Australia–India Council and has been co-convenor of the Australian–Indonesia dialogue. He is Chair of the Advisory Board of the Griffith Asia Institute. John has been involved in the private sector\, including as Senior Adviser to Mitsubishi Materials Corporation. He was appointed an Officer of the Order for Australia in 1999. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome our guest speaker\, Michel Masson\, Chief Executive Officer of Infrastructure Victoria presenting on \n  \n“What should Victoria do to prepare for a zero emission and driverless vehicle future?” \nMichel Masson is Chief Executive Officer at Infrastructure Victoria\, an independent body responsible for delivering Victoria’s first ever 30-year infrastructure strategy. \nMichel started his career at Deloitte before joining the Bollore Group where he held various senior finance positions in the transport and logistics division in the UK\, Australia and New Zealand. In 2005 he joined Keolis as head of Finance and Operations for the International Division where he was responsible for leading public transport operations in seven countries and held various non-executive director positions in UK and German rail franchises. \nMichel was appointed CEO of Yarra Trams in 2009 and helped lead the development of Keolis Downer throughout Australia\, before joining the Calibre group in 2014 to create and lead its Transport Infrastructure business. \nMichel is a graduate from the EDHEC Business School in France\, and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome our guest speaker\, The Honourable Justice Sarah Derrington\, President of the Australian Law Reform Commission and Judge of the Federal Court of Australia. \nAs part of the event we will also be launching a scholarship to recognise the significant contribution made by The Honourable Marcia Neave AO to Australian society and Queen’s College. \n  \nThe Honourable Justice  Sarah Derrington\nThe Honourable Justice Sarah Derrington is President of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) and a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia. \nJustice Derrington was the Dean of Law at the University of Queensland and a barrister specialising in maritime and shipping law\, general commercial law and arbitration. \nJustice Derrington is a Director of the Australian Maritime College (AMC)\, a member of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA)\, the Commonwealth’s Admiralty Rules Committee\, the Council of the Australian National Maritime Museum and is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and of the Australian Academy of Law.  She is an immediate past Director of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and past President of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ) \nShe has published in leading international journals in the field of marine insurance and carriage of goods by sea and\, with James M Turner of the English Bar\, co-authored The Law & Practice of Admiralty Matters (OUP\, 2007). She was the co-Editor of the Queensland Reports from July 2011 until May 2015.

(Hons.\, Dalhousie & Law Society of Upper Canada) F.R.S.C.\, is the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law at the University of Victoria Law School in British Columbia. \nHis publications include\, Recovering Canada; The Resurgence of Indigenous Law (Donald Smiley Award for the best book in Canadian Political Science\, 2002)\,Canada’s Indigenous Constitution (Canadian Law and Society Best Book Award 2011)\, Drawing Out Law: A Spirit’s Guide (2010)\, Freedom and Indigenous Constitutionalism (Donald Smiley Award for the best book in Canadian Political Science\, 2016)\, The Right Relationship (with Michael Coyle\, ed.)\, all from the University of Toronto Press. \nJohn is Anishinaabe/Ojibway and a member of the Chippewa of the Nawash First Nation in Ontario\, Canada.
