Proudly from the Komet Tribe of Mer and raised in Far North Queensland\, Alex leads national Indigenous data policy work and has recently focused on Priority Reform 4 under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Her career has taken her across the country working with communities in pursuit of self determination\, with Indigenous governance and Indigenous data sovereignty at its heart. \nThe conversation \nWe live in a world where data are treated as fact\, yet Indigenous people are often left out of the count. Will became interested in hip-hop through studies of popular music. His dissertation focused on hip-hop and race issues in America. Will completed his BA in Music at Durham University. Whilst at Durham\, he was Director of Music at St Cuthbert’s Chapel Choir for two years. Subsequently\, Will went to the University of St Andrews for postgraduate study in Sacred Music. Music-making in St Andrews included singing as a Choral Scholar and conducting the St Leonard’s Chapel Choir. After study\, Will went to Peterborough Cathedral as their Conducting Scholar\, directing the Cathedral Choir three times a week. Since arriving in Melbourne Will has joined Christ Church\, South Yarra as a Bass Choral Scholar and Conducting Scholar. He is also currently deputy director of the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Master and Head of College\, Dr Michael Stepniak\, and Queen’s College as we launch the Inaugural Gill Oration in recognition of the remarkable contribution of Dr Stewart Gill OAM to education and Queen’s College. \nDr Stewart Gill OAM\npresents \nThe Getting of Wisdom:\nAn Education for Life\, Not Just for Livelihood\nTuesday\, 1 September 2026\n5:30 PM – Drinks | 6:00 PM – Oration\nJunior Common Room\, Queen’s College\nDrinks and canapés will follow the Oration. \nNo onsite parking: Taxis and public transport recommended. \nAbout Dr Stewart Gill OAM\nDr Stewart Gill OAM is an Honorary Senior Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies (SHAPS)\, University of Melbourne\, and he served as the eighth Master of Queen’s College. \nHe has had a distinguished career in collegiate leadership and education. Prior to Queen’s\, Dr Gill served as the Principal of Emmanuel College\, University of Queensland. He was also Founder and Director of the Emmanuel Centre for the Study of Science\, Religion and Society.  Later\, he was appointed Adjunct Professor in the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry.  Dr Gill continued his contribution to collegiate life in Melbourne as the Warden of Ridley College and the Deputy Warden of Trinity College. \nIn retirement\, he remains active in the education and not-for-profit sectors. He serves on several boards and is the Australian Ambassador for the Association of Commonwealth Universities. \nSynopsis:\n“The Getting of Wisdom”: An Education for Life\, Not Just for Livelihood \nThe title of this talk is taken from the 1910 coming-of-age novel\, ‘The Getting of Wisdom’\, by Henry Handel Richardson\, the pseudonym of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. While the book deals with the journey of a young woman from rural Victoria to a Melbourne boarding school in the late nineteenth century. Its title points to a debate that runs through the history of education. \nThis talk will reflect on “the getting of wisdom” and the role that a college can play in a university system that is often being increasingly aligned with preparing students solely for livelihood and future vocation over critical and creative thinking. \nThe case will be argued for the important role that residential communities can play in the creation of spaces for critical inquiry\, ethical development and personal resilience to help equip students for the complexities of life and to contribute to the communities in which they will live and serve.

She will also review other finalist entries. This will include previously unpublished pictorial material. \n \nRunner-up William Lucas’s design\n \nPhilip Powell has long researched the war histories and graves of Queen’s College and Wesley College students and will share some of his remarkable discoveries. \nAbout Dr Katti Williams\nPhD\, Wyvern 1994 \nKatti Williams is a Postdoctoral Research fellow in Australian architectural history\, in the Faculty of Architecture\, Building and Planning. Her PhD thesis\, completed in 2017 at the University of Melbourne\, comprised the first sustained academic study of the Australian early twentieth-century architect William Lucas\, with a specific focus on his unbuilt designs for First World War memorials. Her research is a nexus between art\, architectural\, military\, and cultural histories. \nHer major research interests include the design and interpretation of commemorative architecture\, manifestations and transformations of classical precedent\, soldier architects\, unbuilt competitive designs\, and rich architectural biography. \nAbout Philip Powell\nB.Com (Hons) \nPhilip Powell attended Wesley College Melbourne and the University of Melbourne. While focused on a career in finance\, in 2011\, he commenced researching the military service and stories of former Wesley College students in World Wars I and II.  Many of these were also Queen’s College residents. He has also visited many of the battlefields\, CWGC cemeteries and memorials. \nHe has documented their military service and is currently completing a book on the service of Old Wesley Collegians in WWII. Dr. Michael Stepniak\, former Dean & Professor of Music at Shenandoah Conservatory (USA)\, has spent a lifetime chasing both. A musician\, scholar\, and academic leader\, he has built a career at the intersection of art\, education\, and human flourishing; a space where the arts are not merely performed but engaged with as catalysts for insight\, empathy\, and transformation. \nNow\, as the 9th Master and Head of College at Queen’s College\, University of Melbourne\, he invites students\, alumni\, Fellows\, and friends to join him in an evening that is not a lecture but an exploration. \nA globally travelled concert artist and award-winning graduate of Harvard\, Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins\, and Northwestern\, Michael has led dynamic educational communities\, shaped transformative initiatives in higher education\, served on international arts education boards\, and challenged entrenched ideas about the role of education and the arts. He has performed on concert stages worldwide and wrestled with a deceptively simple question: What kind of arts encounters are truly capable of transformation? His conclusion? Ones that involve not so much admiration as structured\, active engagement involving deep seeing\, brave questioning.
