SUMMARY:Sugden Institute Indigenous Oration
DESCRIPTION:The Master and Head of College\, Dr Michael Stepniak\, warmly invites you and your guest to the annual Indigenous Oration at Queen’s College. \nThis year’s speaker is Kevin O’Brien\, one of Australia’s most influential Indigenous architects. With a practice deeply grounded in Country and three decades of visionary work\, Kevin will challenge us to consider how the arts can reveal what has been hidden\, call us to deeper listening\, and renew our shared commitments to truth\, identity\, and justice. \nFinding Limits\nKevin O’Brien \nThursday 21 August 2025\n5:30pm arrival for 6pm Oration\nJunior Common Room\nQueen’s College \nRSVP here by Thursday 14 August. \nNo onsite parking:\nUber\, taxi\, trams recommended. \nSynopsis\nOver the past 30 years\, moments to step outside daily practice and critically reflect on architecture’s role in shaping culture and society have been rare. Presenting The Finding Country Exhibition at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale sparked a deeper engagement with the arts\, revealing its power as a space for unbounded imagination. Collaborations with First Nations creatives—like Archie Moore on Kith and Kin for the 2024 Venice Biennale\, and Issac Drandic on Dear Son for Queensland Theatre 2025—have shown how the arts reflect and question our national identity. The arts give voice to complex stories\, engage freedom of thought and speech\, and underpin democracy. Yet today\, we see funding cuts to arts organisations\, politicisation of the Venice Biennale 2026 artist selection\, and the cancellation of First Nations cultural projects. It is no longer a matter of simply supporting the arts\, the arts are under attack. \nAbout Kevin O’Brien\nKevin O’Brien (b. 1972\, Melbourne) is a Principal Architect at BVN\, renowned for forging deep cultural connections through his “Designing with Country” approach\, which intertwines Indigenous\, colonial\, and multicultural narratives in architecture. A Kaurareg–Meriam descendant\, he earned his BArch (1995) and MPhil in Architecture (2006) from the University of Queensland. In 2018\, he joined BVN\, where he leads multidisciplinary teams and champions carbon-conscious design. O’Brien has held academic roles at QUT\, University of Sydney\, and Portland State University\, and curated the influential “Finding Country” at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.

SUMMARY:Sugden Institute Oration with Dr. Michael Stepniak
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to the first Sugden Institute event for 2025. \nThis is not a Lecture: The Weight of Seeing\, the\nCourage of Asking\nwith\nDr. Michael Stepniak \nThursday 10 April 2025\n5:30pm arrival for 6pm oration followed by drinks and canapés\nJunior Common Room\, Queen’s College \nRSVP by Monday 7 April at rsvp@queens.unimelb.edu.au to Michele Mulder. \nNo onsite parking:\nUber\, taxi\, trams recommended. \nSynopsis\nWe rush\, we scroll\, we consume; mistaking motion for meaning\, speed for wisdom. \nThis evening is not about productivity\, consumption\, or certainty. It is about the courage to engage with a wild openness of heart. \nThe invitation? To pause\, to look\, to listen\, and\, perhaps\, to speak with deep honesty. \nThis is not a lecture. It is an experiment in attention and truth-telling; a moment of playful attentiveness before the world sweeps us on. \nWhat to expect\nYou will be invited into two carefully structured activities\, including an art-centred experience grounded in research in developmental psychology\, aesthetics\, and art. \nThe evening will draw on the interplay of imagination\, cognition\, and emotion. \nThe offered outcome? A deeper connection\, with each other\, with ourselves. \nAbout Dr. Michael Stepniak\nBA\, MMus\, MMus\, EdM\, EdD\nMaster & Head of College\, Queen’s College\, The University of Melbourne\nHonorary Principal Fellow\, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music\, The University of Melbourne \nSome people pursue knowledge; others pursue meaning. Dr. Michael Stepniak\, former Dean & Professor of Music at Shenandoah Conservatory (USA)\, has spent a lifetime chasing both. A musician\, scholar\, and academic leader\, he has built a career at the intersection of art\, education\, and human flourishing; a space where the arts are not merely performed but engaged with as catalysts for insight\, empathy\, and transformation. \nNow\, as the 9th Master and Head of College at Queen’s College\, University of Melbourne\, he invites students\, alumni\, Fellows\, and friends to join him in an evening that is not a lecture but an exploration. \nA globally travelled concert artist and award-winning graduate of Harvard\, Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins\, and Northwestern\, Michael has led dynamic educational communities\, shaped transformative initiatives in higher education\, served on international arts education boards\, and challenged entrenched ideas about the role of education and the arts. He has performed on concert stages worldwide and wrestled with a deceptively simple question: What kind of arts encounters are truly capable of transformation? His conclusion? Ones that involve not so much admiration as structured\, active engagement involving deep seeing\, brave questioning.
