DESCRIPTION:Join the Master and Head of College\, Dr Michael Stepniak\, and Queen’s College as we launch the Inaugural Gill Oration in recognition of the remarkable contribution of Dr Stewart Gill OAM to education and Queen’s College. \nDr Stewart Gill OAM\npresents \nThe Getting of Wisdom:\nAn Education for Life\, Not Just for Livelihood\nTuesday\, 1 September 2026\n5:30 PM – Drinks | 6:00 PM – Oration\nJunior Common Room\, Queen’s College\nDrinks and canapés will follow the Oration. \nNo onsite parking: Taxis and public transport recommended. \nAbout Dr Stewart Gill OAM\nDr Stewart Gill OAM is an Honorary Senior Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies (SHAPS)\, University of Melbourne\, and he served as the eighth Master of Queen’s College. \nHe has had a distinguished career in collegiate leadership and education. Prior to Queen’s\, Dr Gill served as the Principal of Emmanuel College\, University of Queensland. He was also Founder and Director of the Emmanuel Centre for the Study of Science\, Religion and Society.  Later\, he was appointed Adjunct Professor in the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry.  Dr Gill continued his contribution to collegiate life in Melbourne as the Warden of Ridley College and the Deputy Warden of Trinity College. \nIn retirement\, he remains active in the education and not-for-profit sectors. He serves on several boards and is the Australian Ambassador for the Association of Commonwealth Universities. \nSynopsis:\n“The Getting of Wisdom”: An Education for Life\, Not Just for Livelihood \nThe title of this talk is taken from the 1910 coming-of-age novel\, ‘The Getting of Wisdom’\, by Henry Handel Richardson\, the pseudonym of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. While the book deals with the journey of a young woman from rural Victoria to a Melbourne boarding school in the late nineteenth century. Its title points to a debate that runs through the history of education. \nThis talk will reflect on “the getting of wisdom” and the role that a college can play in a university system that is often being increasingly aligned with preparing students solely for livelihood and future vocation over critical and creative thinking. \nThe case will be argued for the important role that residential communities can play in the creation of spaces for critical inquiry\, ethical development and personal resilience to help equip students for the complexities of life and to contribute to the communities in which they will live and serve.

DESCRIPTION:The Master and Head of College\, Dr Michael Stepniak warmly invites you to Fellows’ Chapel Service in our Memorial Chapel\, featuring the College Choir under the direction of Will Fellows. \nDetails as follows: \n  \nFellows’ Chapel Service\nMemorial Chapel | Queen’s College Campus \nSunday 13 September 2026 | 4:00 PM \nQueen’s College Choir – Directed by Will Fellows \nService will be followed by drinks and canapés \nNo onsite parking: Uber\, taxi\, trams recommended \nRSVP by Thursday 10 September \n  \n\n\nWilliam Fellows \n\nWill started his musical career as a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral\, becoming Senior Chorister in his final year\, and a Deputy Lay Clerk during school. During his undergraduate studies\, his interests remained with choral music. Will became interested in hip-hop through studies of popular music. His dissertation focused on hip-hop and race issues in America. Will completed his BA in Music at Durham University. Whilst at Durham\, he was Director of Music at St Cuthbert’s Chapel Choir for two years. Subsequently\, Will went to the University of St Andrews for postgraduate study in Sacred Music. Music-making in St Andrews included singing as a Choral Scholar and conducting the St Leonard’s Chapel Choir. After study\, Will went to Peterborough Cathedral as their Conducting Scholar\, directing the Cathedral Choir three times a week. Since arriving in Melbourne Will has joined Christ Church\, South Yarra as a Bass Choral Scholar and Conducting Scholar. He is also currently deputy director of the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir.
